Morning after Pill

What is the Morning After Pill?
The purpose of the pill is to reduce the possibility of pregnancy following sex.
Despite it’s name, it can be taken up to 3 days after sex, or even up to 5 days after, depending on the type of pill.
When should you use the Morning After Pill?
It’s designed for use in situations such as:
- following unprotected sex
- a condom broke during sex
- other factors have possibly rendered your contraceptive pills innefective…such as antibiotics or physical factors like vomiting.
Different types of pill
There are two types of pill available in Australia
- LNG-ECP – a single dose emergency contraceptive that can be used up to 3 days after sex.
- UPA, which can be used up to 5 days after sex.
How effective is the morning after pill?
If taken within 3 days of sex, LNG-ECP is between 80 and 90% effective. It should be taken as soon as possible after sex.
The UPA pill, taken within 5 days of sex, is approximately 98% effective. This pill should also be taken as soon as possible after sex.
How safe is taking the pill?
Both types of pill are considered safe, with no long-term complications. Some women though, report problems such as:
- Nausea
- Headache
- Abdominal pain
- Sore breasts
- Dizziness
